Earlier this week a nice gentleman (we'll call him NG) came in carrying a cat in a cat carrier. He didn't have an appointment but he had a cat in need. He said he had seen the cat wandering around his neighborhood for about a month living in the sewer drain. He mostly left it alone until he had seen that the cat couldn't get out of the sewer drain. He was concerned she would be drowned by any rushing water so he and his wife managed to rescue her.
It became immediately apparent that the cat had some problems in its rear end so he brought her in. NG expressed his desire to own the cat, but wasn't sure that he could. NG is on a fixed income you see. He didn't have a lot of money to spare, especially for vet bills, especially for a cat that was not his to care for. The cat was taken to the back and the technicians worked up an estimate with the doctor.
The doctor said the stray had abscesses which would need attention, antibiotics, drains, and stitches. To begin the work, NG would have to pay a not insignificant deposit. Instead of leaving, instead of turning this little injured girl back to the street, he went to the bank and paid the deposit.
All of us have been so touched by NG's commitment to this stray's health. He paid for hospitalization and has brought her back for her first follow up appointment. My day brightens and my eyes tear up when I see this man returning to care for a cat that wasn't his.
Remember this, remember NG and his stray cat. If someone on a fixed income can care for something that is not his own, and make it his own, what's to stop us from caring for those that ARE ours?
